Welcome – Mr Richard Usher Executive Principal
On behalf of our school community, I welcome all of our new Year 7 students as well as the new and continuing parents to our school for 2025. Our school motto “nothing without effort, nothing but the best" remains our mission. As our new Year 7 students embark on their first week of secondary schooling at Cavendish Road SHS, I wish them every success in their journey across the next 6 years. I also encourage students in the middle years as seasoned Cavroadians to apply themselves to learning habits of persistence and experience the rewards of contributing in some small way to your school. For senior students, as you enter the final years or your last year of school, you are encouraged to make the most of the staging point to your post-school aspirations.
I take this opportunity to draw attention to our Enrolment Agreement, that when enrolled at Cavendish Road, of the mutual obligations that this agreement encompasses. We are a school expectant of high standards of personal conduct, cooperation and accountability that makes for a school that is safe for all and a place of belonging. We promote a culture for learning in our school and this includes respectful relationships, valuing the opportunities presented and being a part of a community where teachers teach, students learn and are supported to be the best they can be, progress each year, and achieve great outcomes.
Richard Usher
Executive Principal

Year 7
I am thrilled to be the Head of Student Services for Junior School in 2025. As the newest Cavroadians make their transition to high school, know that this year marks an exciting new chapter - a time filled with opportunities, growth, and challenges.
The beginning of high school brings new expectations, unfamiliar routines, and many new faces. This period of change is important not just academically, but personally, as students forge lifelong friendships, develop skills they'll carry with them through life, and begin to discover more about who they are as individuals. Navigating this transition can be tough at times, but rest assured, we are here to guide and support them every step of the way.
Our school has a fantastic team dedicated to helping Year 7 students thrive. Together, our Guidance Officers, Deputy Principals, Support Staff, and Year 7 Teachers are committed to ensuring everyone feels supported and empowered to succeed. There will always be someone available to offer advice, guidance, or support, whether it's for academic needs, emotional wellbeing, or social growth.
My focus is on monitoring and supporting your young person's wellbeing, attendance, academic progress, and behaviour throughout the year. But more than that, my goal is to help each student discover and build on their individual strengths, encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones and aim for personal excellence. We will focus on fostering a compassionate mindset and creating a strong sense of belonging in our community. Together, we will make 2025 a year full of growth, achievement, and positive change.
I look forward to working with you and your young people this year. Here's to an exciting and successful year ahead!
Year 8
I am thrilled to be the Head of Student Services for Junior School in 2025, and to welcome our Year 8 students and families to what promises to be another fantastic year. After a successful transition to high school last year, our young people are now well on their way to being leaders within the school.
Year 8 is a crucial time for personal growth, and as our young people continue to settle into high school, we will focus on strengthening their sense of self and growing their independence. They are no longer newcomers; they are role models for our Year 7 students, and with that comes the opportunity to demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and maturity within our school community. This year, we'll encourage them to step into these roles with confidence, while fostering kindness and empathy as key values in everything they do.
Our fantastic team of Guidance Officers, Deputy Principals, Support Staff, and Year 8 Teachers remain committed to ensuring your young person continues to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Whether it's navigating new challenges or offering support in their personal development, there will always be someone to lend a helping hand.
I am here to continue supporting your young person's wellbeing, academic progress, and personal growth throughout the year. My focus is to help each student build on their individual strengths, take on new challenges, and develop the skills they need to succeed. We will continue to foster a strong sense of belonging in our community, all while encouraging independence, confidence and leadership.
I look forward to working with you and your young people this year. Here's to an exciting and successful Year 8—full of growth, opportunity, and achievement!

Senior School - HoSS
Leonard Lai
Dear Parents, Caregivers, and Students,
Welcome to the 2025 school year! My name is Leonard Lai, and I am excited to introduce myself as the new Head of Department – Student Services for Years 11 and 12 at Cavendish Road State High School.
As we embark on this journey together, my focus is on fostering a strong sense of belonging and ensuring that every student feels valued as a member of our school community. I am passionate about creating opportunities for student voice to be heard, empowering our young people to actively contribute to shaping their school experience.
For our Year 11 students, this year marks the beginning of their senior education pathway and presents a unique opportunity to embrace “everyday leadership”. Leadership is not limited to titles or formal roles but is about the choices we make, how we support one another, and how we demonstrate integrity and resilience in our daily actions. I encourage all Year 11 students to lead by example and set the tone for a positive, inclusive, and thriving senior school environment.
For our Year 12 students, 2024 is the culmination of their schooling journey—a year to celebrate achievements, overcome challenges, and leave a meaningful “legacy”. I encourage our senior students to reflect on the impact they wish to have on their peers, their school, and the wider community. Together, we will work to ensure that this final year is both memorable and impactful, creating a foundation for future success.
I look forward to collaborating with students, families, and staff to make this year a rewarding and enriching experience for all. I encourage open communication and invite you to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback. Together, we can create an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can thrive and contribute their unique strengths.
Wishing you all a successful and fulfilling year ahead!
