Cavendish Road SHS provides students with a once in a lifetime chance to learn valuable life skills through their participation in an exciting expedition to a challenging destination - life skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, awareness of others, risk management and money management. It’s not just an amazing trip to another country, but a whole developmental journey that starts long before students step on a plane.

The Cav Rd programs are facilitated by trained expedition leaders but are student led. The Expedition company book the first night’s accommodation – and that’s it! Students will have to take on all the day-to-day responsibilities and manage the budget for the duration of the expedition. We want our students coming back changed people. By planning their own itinerary and travelling to the other side of the world, spending time volunteering in a developing community and trekking through challenging terrain, World Challenge believe that this growth can be achieved.

This program is an 18 month leadership and personal development program, which culminates in a three week expedition to a developing country. The program involves the students raising the funds for the expedition, planning the expedition and finally leading the expedition within the destination country. 

The trip is offered every two years to students in Yrs 10 and 11 in the year of the trip.

Cavendish Road SHS expedition to Nepal 2020

In 2020 Cav Rd will again venture to Nepal. This time there will be two versions of the expedition - a trek to Mt Everest Base Camp and then the regular option similar to 2018. Apart from that, where we go and what we do will be planned by the students over the next year or so. 

Cavendish Road SHS expedition to Nepal 2018

In 2018 Cav Rd returned to Nepal with two groups. The first group trekked the Poon Hill hike and contributed to a school project in Chitwan. The second group elected to take a longer 9 day trek and went to Annapurna Sanctury and Annapurna Base Camp. This group contributed to a primary school project in Pokhara. Both teams enjoyed seeing the sights, smells and sounds of Kathmandu.

Cavendish Road SHS expedition to Cambodia-Vietnam 2016

Acclimatisation will be spent around Siem Reap area before setting out on the trek. Students can visit local markets, the Ankor Wat temples and surrounding villages.
Treks can be around Siem Reap, Mundalkuri or in southern Vietnam. All treks are fully supported by porters and guides and although it's challenging, the cultural and environmental experience is priceless.
Teams work in orphanages or schools, organising activities for the children and doing much needed renovation work on often very sparse buildings.
Teams may choose to spend time visiting the museums of Pnomh Penh and Ho Chi Minh City, exploring Vietnam War sites such as Long Tan and the Chi Chi tunnels, floating markets in the Mekong Delta or explore the historic city Hoi An.

Cavendish Road SHS expedition to Nepal 2014

We spent a couple of days in Kathmandu before setting out on our treks. One team head to Pokara to do the Poon Hill hike and the other to the Langtang region. 
Trek up to 4500m with spectacular views in the Langtang region or visit the Annapurna range near Pokhara for some panoramic views. All treks are fully supported by porters and guides and although it's challenging, the views of the surrounding Himalaya are stunning!
The teams worked in schools, organising activities for the children and doing much needed renovation work on sparse buildings. 
Teams spent time visiting the temples of Kathmandu, exploring Durbar Square, head south to Chitwan National Park and exploring the lake shores of Pokhara.

Cavendish Road SHS expedition to Borneo 2012


This World Challenge program was an exciting opportunity for a team of students to research, fund and lead their own 21 days expedition to the fascinating island of Borneo.

The Expedition was preceded by 15 months of training and preparation.  During this time, team members learned a great deal about their destination and research the Expedition objectives with the support of their Program Facilitator and School Support Co-coordinator from World Challenge. This team involvement continued during the Expedition itself when they took on responsibility for leading the team, managing the budget, liaising with local guides and successfully achieving their objectives with the guidance of a World Challenge Leader.  The whole program taught and developed essential transferable life skills including financial management, leadership, teamwork, communication, organisation and decision making.

Borneo offered the team a huge variety of objectives and challenges. Teams went trekking in both Sabah and Sarawak.  Sabah is home to the highest mountain in South East Asia - Mount Kinabalu, as well as the challenging and beautiful Mount Trus Madi. Treks in Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, are in the Kelabit Highlands, known as the heart of the Borneo jungle, or one of the many National Parks.  Here you will also find the world’s oldest limestone caves as well as a wide variety of fascinating flora and fauna.  The team found themselves trekking through villages where they saw local people and traditional longhouses.

A community phase is a key part in gaining a greater understanding of the culture of the people of this beautiful country. The majority of projects are based within small communities where Challengers live and work alongside the local people. At the end of the expedition the beautiful coastline of Borneo offered a welcoming environment to unwind or the team visited one of the Orang Utan Sanctuaries!

Whatever they did in Borneo, the participants found it a challenge and hugely rewarding. They returned as confident and motivated young adults, ready to tackle their next challenge in life, be it their final year of schooling, embarking on university, or their professional career.
