Year 7 - 9 students at Cavendish Road State High School are required to supply an iPad as standard school equipment through a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. The iPad is the core learning device.
Year 7 - 9 students are expected to have their iPad at school and fully charged each day. Ensure there is enough space to save school work and install apps and books for classes. Students must abide by the standards in the school's Student Code of Conduct.
Cavendish Road State High School Year 7s, 8s and 9s will use the iPad as a tool to support key processes and our curriculum is heavily based around use of an iPad in the classroom. Due to the specialised apps required in our classroom environment, a laptop is not a suitable replacement for year levels using an iPad.
Current requirements
Technical Specifications | • iPad 8th Gen or newer. 64GB or 256GB with Apple Pencil or equivalent pencil • Case/Keyboard • Headphones
|
Recommended:
| • 2 Year Apple Care
|
Optional:
| • Screen Protector
|
*32GB devices are acceptable for the commencement of Year 7 though we do not expect this will be of sufficient capacity later in Years 7–9.
The iPad combined with an Apple Pencil enables students to annotate on screen, take notes, sketch ideas, mark up documents and show working out and thinking.
Students may have a 4G or 5G enabled device, however, they will be required to access resources and internet through the school's Wi-Fi network while at school. A Wi-Fi only model reduces the cost of the device without compromising the student's ability to complete school lessons.

What questions should I ask at purchase?
- How long the device will take to repair if broken?
- Where does the device need to be sent for repair?
- What does the warranty cover and what does it not cover (eg liquid spill)?
- Do you offer accidental damage cover?
- what are the terms?
- what is accidental damage?
- what is the excess?
- is my device covered for loss and/or theft?
Having the answers to these in writing would be a good idea.
Insurance
We strongly recommend that all personal electronic devices are insured against accidental damage, loss and theft. You can either:
- include the iPad on your home and contents insurance
- contact an insurer that offers specific student device cover products
The school takes no responsibility for damage and/or theft.
What are the processes for a repair if your iPad is broken?
As part of your purchasing decisions, information on warranty repair processes would have been provided. If you have also purchased Accidental Damage coverage/AppleCare information on processes for this will also have been provided. Keep the information in a safe place and know what to do if the iPad is faulty or damaged. The Cavendish Road SHS BYOD program maintains a pool iPad for students with broken or faulty personally owned devices. Pool device will be provided to students upon proof of repair. Arranging repair of faulty or damaged personally owned devices is the responsibility of students/parents.
Curriculum
Our goal is for students to use iPads as a tool to support key processes in learning. Teachers use them as an environment to facilitate deeper engagement in learning and higher-order thinking. The iPad has the varied functionality that will allow students to consume and produce information in a mobile form through:
- textbooks available on the iPad
- a wide range of classroom apps and tools
- resources that are available 24/7.
During lessons, where visual media tools are being used (e.g. video recording a science experiment), students will be projecting work through Vivi wireless screen mirroring technology.
Textbooks and apps
We aim to have all resource books accessible on the iPad. Textbook will be available via Campion.
A list of apps is included in the school resource list. Most will be free; however there may be some that will have a small cost. We will tell you if any new apps or books are required during the year.
Monitoring and cyber safety
We expect students to take responsibility for their use and their device. Web filtering has its benefits; however these systems are not foolproof and will never block 100% of inappropriate content. If you have any concerns, please talk to your child’s teacher.
