Welcome – Mr Richard Usher Executive Principal
On behalf of our school community I welcome all of our new Year 7 students as well as the new and continuing parents to our school for 2024. Cavendish Road SHS is a proud and highly accomplished school with a great culture for learning by any measure of academic achievement. Our school motto “nothing without effort, nothing but the best" remains our mission. As our new Year 7 students embark on their first week of secondary schooling at Cavendish Road SHS, I wish them every success in their journey across the next 6 years.

Infrastructure works for 2024
As part of a Department of Education Ed4All funding grant, 2024 will see a number of much needed upgrades to our school to improve accessibility. These upgrades will include: A large PWD toilet and change facility with specialised equipment in C block, an access ramp from the ESS building to safely connect with J and Y block, new disability parking area and disability vehicle drop off/pick zone in front of ESS, an access ramp into the iCentre, an access ramp into the canteen, improved access across the F and O block areas and general improvements to the main pathway along the Cav Rd boundary pathways.
This is an incredible investment in our school and our staff are very excited about the benefit for our school community. As with any large building works in schools there will be some disruptions to our usual operations. Individual communications will be sent to families who will be affected by the temporary changes to drop off and pick up arrangements. Our team is working very closely with the project manager and contractor to ensure safe access and minimal disruption for the start of the school year. I know that the whole school community will be excited to see the improvements.
The first day of school at Cav Rd – What to do?
The first day of Year 7 is Monday 22 January. Students are to meet at the Alan Sampson Sports Centre (accessed through Gate 6a on Elgar Street) commencing at 8:45am. This first day will be a day where students meet their new classmates, teachers, learn about the school grounds, classrooms, routines and values.
Students are to wear their formal school uniform. In their school bags, students only need their pencil case, water bottle and their food for the day. The canteen will be open for students to purchase lunch.
Ipads – What to do?
iPads will not be needed on the first two days. iPads will be required at school from Wednesday 24 January. Please note that all student MIS passwords will be reset on Monday 22 January after the students have commenced. Prior to Wednesday 24 January please ensure you and your student has completed steps 1 to 3 of the Setting up your iPad instructions. Onboarding of their iPads to the school network will commence on Wednesday 24 January.
School Photos
School photos will be taken on day 1, Monday 22 January. This way we can provide student ID cards to our students quickly. We will send a separate email soon with the online instructions to order Cavendish Road High School 2024 Photos. If your child misses having their individual or sibling photo for any reason there is a catch-up day scheduled for Friday 2 February (week 2).
Year 7 Deputy Principal – Paul Cox
Welcome to Cavendish Road SHS. As the Year 7 Deputy Principal, I look forward to welcoming all of our new Cavroadians to our school on Day One - Monday 22 January. Our goal is to establish and instil in new students a sense of feeling happy, safe and of belonging as a Cavroadian as quickly as possible. At Cav Rd we understand change can present some challenges for our young people (academically, socially and emotionally) and we aim to make the transition process a positive experience for each individual. We believe a successful transition will help build confidence in our students' ability to step into new situations.
With an initial week one focus of “getting a feel" for Cav Rd and our expectations, we encourage our newly enrolled students to open their senses from day one and absorb the culture of Cav Rd to gain a sense of where and how they fit into the mix of our great school. A good start is be courteous, polite and kind to others so we all feel welcome, fit in together and feel accepted. A happy learner is an engaged learner.
In 2024, we will host a Year 7 Parent Evening scheduled for Thursday 8 February (week 3) to ensure parents/carers and teachers have an opportunity to meet, establish relationships and share information about our school and our Year 7 learners. We will be in contact with an update of this event.

Year 7 Dean – Olivia Weier
I am thrilled to be the Dean of Year 7 in 2024. As the newest Cavroadians make their transition into high school, I hope that they are excited for a new beginning!
The fresh start often brings with it a mix of emotions, including a lot of uncertainty, as the Year 7s face the challenges of a new school, with new people, and new expectations. It is my goal to ensure that everyone feels safe and supported in this new, unknown environment, and finds their feet, whilst finding themselves. This stage of life is vital for the development of students, where they are learning skills that they will use through the rest of their lives, forming lifelong friendships, and learning more about their hobbies and talents. The Cav Rd community can't wait to see what this new cohort brings to the table, and we are excited to see them grow into independent young adults.
Within the school community, there is a fantastic team working to help guide our Year 7s through this journey. The combination of our Guidance Officers, Deputy Principals, Support Staff, and Year 7 Core Teachers, means there will always be someone there to offer advice, guidance or support. This exceptionally committed team is working with a common goal; to ensure that every student feels supported in their own path to success.
My role as Year 7 Dean includes monitoring student wellbeing, attendance, academic achievement and behaviour throughout the year, however I believe it is much more than this. My goal for the 2024 Year 7 students is to work towards finding, and building on individual strengths, and becoming the best version of themselves. There will be a focus on acting with compassion and stepping out of comfort zones, all while ensuring students feel a strong sense of belonging in our community. This will be achieved through developing and maintaining high expectations, and positive attitudes towards engaging in all aspects of school life. Bring on 2024!
