Welcome –  Executive Principal

On behalf of our school community, I welcome all of our new Year 7 students as well as the new and continuing parents to our school for 2026. Our school motto “nothing without effort, nothing but the best" remains our mission. As our new Year 7 students embark on their first week of secondary schooling at Cavendish Road SHS, I wish them every success in their journey across the next 6 years. I also encourage students in the middle years as seasoned Cavroadians to apply themselves to learning habits of persistence and experience the rewards of contributing in some small way to your school. For senior students, as you enter the final years or your last year of school, you are encouraged to make the most of the staging point to your post-school aspirations.

I take this opportunity to draw attention to our Enrolment Agreement, that when enrolled at Cavendish Road, of the mutual obligations that this agreement encompasses. We are a school expectant of high standards of personal conduct, cooperation and accountability that makes for a school that is safe for all and a place of belonging. We promote a culture for learning in our school and this includes respectful relationships, valuing the opportunities presented and being a part of a community where teachers teach, students learn and are supported to be the best they can be, progress each year, and achieve great outcomes.

Richard Usher

Executive Principal

Support for Every Student

At Cavendish Road State High School, each year level is guided and supported by a dedicated Head of Student Services (HoSS). The Head of Student Services plays a vital role in fostering positive relationships, providing support for every student and leading the implementation of our pastoral care program. They also champion school pride, belonging, and the Cavroadian spirit that unites our community.

We are delighted to introduce our Head of Student Services for 2026, who will continue to inspire and support our students in achieving their best.

Junior School - HoSS

Michael Mientjes

I am thrilled to be the Head of Student Services for Junior School in 2026, and to welcome our Year 8 students and families to what promises to be another fantastic year. After a successful transition to high school last year, our young people are now well on their way to being leaders within the school.

Year 8 is a crucial time for personal growth, and as our young people continue to settle into high school, we will focus on strengthening their sense of self and growing their independence. They are no longer newcomers; they are role models for our Year 7 students, and with that comes the opportunity to demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and maturity within our school community. This year, we'll encourage them to step into these roles with confidence, while fostering kindness and empathy as key values in everything they do.

Our fantastic team of Guidance Officers, Deputy Principals, Support Staff, and Year 8 Teachers remain committed to ensuring your young person continues to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Whether it's navigating new challenges or offering support in their personal development, there will always be someone to lend a helping hand.

I am here to continue supporting your young person's wellbeing, academic progress, and personal growth throughout the year. My focus is to help each student build on their individual strengths, take on new challenges, and develop the skills they need to succeed. We will continue to foster a strong sense of belonging in our community, all while encouraging independence, confidence and leadership.

I look forward to working with you and your young people this year. Here's to an exciting and successful Year 8—full of growth, opportunity, and achievement!

Middle School - HoSS

Mitch Baker

Welcome to the 2026 school year at Cavendish Road State High School! For those who I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting, my name is Mitch Baker and I'm the Head of Department - Student Services for Years 9 and 10 (HoSS). There were significant changes to the Wellbeing and Year Level space in 2025 and I'm incredibly excited to have the opportunity continuing working with the Year 10 cohort, as well as getting to know the students and families in year 9. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the new students and families joining the Cav Road community in 2026.

As the Head of Department - Student Services for Years 9 & 10 (Middle School), I will be working in partnership with the Middle School Deputy Principal, our Guidance Officers, Education & Learning Support Teams, Year Level Care Teachers, HODs and Teaching Staff to promote school pride, belonging, developing student's personal responsibility, motivating academic engagement, facilitating school and community participation, enhancing positive relationships and supporting every student, every day to achieve success at school.

Years 9 and 10 are a time of transition and discovery. During this period, students will develop essential life skills, explore new academic opportunities, and start to shape their future pathways. As the HoSS, I will be working in collaboration with my team, to guide students through their academic choices, offer wellbeing and learning support, and provide advice on future career pathways and senior school options.

I encourage open communication between students, teachers, and families to ensure the best outcomes for each individual. If you ever need assistance or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am here to support every student in their journey at Cavendish Road SHS.

I look forward to a year filled with success, personal growth, and positive experiences. Together, we will make 2026 a fantastic year for all our students.

Senior School - HoSS

Rick Tierney

Welcome to the 2026 school year! I am excited to introduce myself as the new Head of Department – Student Services for Years 11 and 12 at Cavendish Road State High School.

As we embark on this journey together, my focus is on fostering a strong sense of belonging and ensuring that every student feels valued as a member of our school community. I am passionate about creating opportunities for student voice to be heard, empowering our young people to actively contribute to shaping their school experience.

For our Year 11 students, this year marks the beginning of their senior education pathway and presents a unique opportunity to embrace “everyday leadership". Leadership is not limited to titles or formal roles but is about the choices we make, how we support one another, and how we demonstrate integrity and resilience in our daily actions. I encourage all Year 11 students to lead by example and set the tone for a positive, inclusive, and thriving senior school environment.

For our Year 12 students, 2026 is the culmination of their schooling journey—a year to celebrate achievements, overcome challenges, and leave a meaningful “legacy".  I encourage our senior students to reflect on the impact they wish to have on their peers, their school, and the wider community. Together, we will work to ensure that this final year is both memorable and impactful, creating a foundation for future success.

I look forward to collaborating with students, families, and staff to make this year a rewarding and enriching experience for all. I encourage open communication and invite you to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback. Together, we can create an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can thrive and contribute their unique strengths.

Wishing you all a successful and fulfilling year ahead!

Rick Tierney - Head of Student Services - Year 11 & 12
