Welcome – Mr Richard Usher Executive Principal

On behalf of our school community I welcome new and continuing families to our school for 2024. Cavendish Road SHS is a proud and highly accomplished school with a great culture for learning and by any measure of academic achievement. Our school motto “nothing without effort, nothing but the best" remains our mission. As our students return to school next week I wish them every success in their learning and school experience in 2024.

Richard Usher

Executive Principal

Infrastructure works for 2024

As part of a Department of Education Ed4All funding grant, 2024 will see a number of much needed upgrades to our school to improve accessibility.  These upgrades will include: A large PWD toilet and change facility with specialised equipment in C block, an access ramp from the ESS building to safely connect with J and Y block, new disability parking area and disability vehicle drop off/pick zone in front of ESS, an access ramp into the iCentre, an access ramp into the canteen, improved access across the F and O block areas and general improvements to the main pathway along the Cav Rd boundary pathways.

This is an incredible investment in our school and our staff are very excited about the benefit for our school community.  As with any large building works in schools there will be some disruptions to our usual operations.  Individual communications will be sent to families who will be affected by the temporary changes to drop off and pick up arrangements.  Our team is working very closely with the project manager and contractor to ensure safe access and minimal disruption for the start of the school year.  I know that the whole school community will be excited to see the improvements.

The first day of school at Cav Rd – When is it? What to do?

The first day of Year 11 is Monday 22 January. Students are to meet at the PAC by 8:40am and are to wear Formal School Uniform. The formal uniform is required as Year 11 School Photos are taken on this day. Students should bring their school bags with their school laptops, writing equipment, stationery and food for the day. The canteen will be open. Year 11 students will commence with information regarding their first year of the QCAA senior curriculum and then start timetabled classes from Period 3.

The first day of school for Years 8, 9, 10 and 12 Students is Tuesday 23 January. Students are to meet in the Alan Sampson Sports Centre by 8:40am. Year 8 and 9 to wear sports uniform as usual on Tuesday. Year 10 and 12 to wear formal school uniform. Following welcome and orientation information for the new school year, students will commence their regular program of lessons. Students should bring their iPad/laptops, writing equipment and stationery. The school canteen will be open.

For all year levels, new students to the school will be met by their Year Level Deans in the Sports Centre.

School Photos

Traditionally, school photos at Cavendish Road SHS occur very early in the school year. This way we can provide student ID cards to our students quickly.

 The photo schedule is

Monday 22 January – Year 7 and 11

Tuesday 23 January – Year 10 and 12

Wednesday 24 January – Year 8 and 9

If your child misses having their Individual or sibling photo for any reason there will be a catch-up day on Friday 2 February.

We will send a separate email with the online instructions to order Cavendish Road High School 2024 Class Photos.

Each year level of students has a Year Level Dean. The dean works to enhance positive relationships and support for every student as well as overseeing the implementation of the pastoral care program, promoting school pride and belonging and championing the Cavroadian spirit.

Year 8 – Mitch Baker E: mbake131@eq.edu.au  Ph: 33940777

After a fantastic start to high school, I'm very excited to be continuing in 2024 as the Dean of this wonderful cohort of young people. It was a pleasure to be involved in their transition to high school and to watch them demonstrate the resilience to overcome the challenges high school can throw up.

We have an exceptional team of Year 8 Year Level Care teachers who will guide your students throughout 2024. These teachers are committed to supporting students and developing their personal growth through a programme that centres on integrating gratitude, empathy and mindfulness practices. It also provides them with leadership opportunities along the way to prepare them for positions that will be available in Year 9. It is our goal to encourage students to self-regulate and reflect upon their emotional responses to given situations whilst also considering one's own happiness and that of others.  These are practices that will assist our students to further develop connections within our school and local community and provide them with lifelong skills that all young people need to ensure they become productive members of our society.

I look forward to working with you and your young people this year, and welcome all new and returning students. Please keep me updated throughout about any stories of success for your child that could be celebrated and praised at school.

Year 9 – Sebastian Brown E: sbrow494@eq.edu.au  Ph: 33940777

Welcome to 2024! I am taking on the Year 9 Student Dean role this year. I am incredibly excited to be working with the Year 9 cohort in this capacity. In particular, I am looking forward to:

  • Getting to know a wide range of people across the grade. There are a lot of talented students stepping into leadership roles as Junior School leaders. Other students will be involving themselves in school sports programs, music and arts programs, cultural activities, and potentially attempting the Kokoda challenge for the first time.
  • Giving students opportunity to participate in activities at school. This will include things like lunch time challenges, sports games, and cultural and community events that the school celebrates during the year.
  • Celebrating success as a cohort. Year parades will be a very positive space where both in class and out of class success will be recognised and celebrated. Please keep me updated throughout the year about any stories of success for your child that could be celebrated and praised at school.

The Year Level Care program for Year 9 will be looking at the difference between fixed and growth mindsets, and how to implement a growth mindset in everyday life. In Term 3, students will also be preparing to make subject selections for the following year and undertaking a unit of study on the Kokoda values of courage, endurance, mateship, and sacrifice.

Year 10 – Steven Swindlehurst E: sswin12@eq.edu.au Ph:33940777

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Year 10 students for the start of a significant year in their academic career here at Cavendish Road SHS.   As the Dean of Year 10, I will be mentoring, encouraging and supporting all students in their continuing educational journey.  I will be expertly assisted by a dedicated and motivated team of Year Level Care (YLC) teachers.  Year 10 is a pivotal moment in a student's journey as it bridges the junior and senior phase of their schooling.  Therefore, as a milestone moment, it is fitting that our theme for the year revolves around the concept of 'Rite of Passage'.  Our collective goal is not only to support students' academic achievements but to foster skills and qualities in each individual student that will allow them to experience meaningful personal growth.  Later in the year, we will invite parents and caregivers to attend school.  This will provide a valuable opportunity to collaboratively create a Student Education and Training plan for their student as they identify future pathways and career aspirations. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Year 11 – Paul Batchler E: pbatc4@eq.edu.au  Ph:33940777

I'd like to welcome you to the 2024 school year and the start of your child's senior education pathway. I am excited to be the Year 11 Student Dean and I look forward to providing positive curriculum and pastoral care leadership throughout the year. My aim this year is to develop student leadership skills and focus on providing students with the grit and resilience needed to successfully achieve their goals in the senior school. This cohort is brimming with fantastic young adults and it is my pleasure to support and encourage them to achieve success in all aspects of school life. Please don't hesitate in contacting me should you have any questions, feedback or concerns.

Year 12 – Julie Mitchell E: jmitc221@eq.edu.au  Ph: 33940777

I am pleased to be continuing my work as Dean with our Year 12 cohort as they embark on their final year of education here at Cavendish Road State High School. I am eager to support and motivate our senior students in achieving both their personal and academic goals. As our seniors prepare to step beyond the school boundaries, the central focus of this year's pastoral care program is to foster resilience, equipping our students with the skills to thrive in the real world. I am confident that guiding the Year 12 cohort will be another great experience, and I anticipate sharing memorable moments, celebrating achievements, and reaching milestones together in 2024.
