Mathematics at Cavendish Road SHS is delivered in-line with
the Australian Curriculum requirements and QCAA expectations from Years 7 through 10. As a department, we offer opportunities for extension and
acceleration at different junctures.
In Year 7, Mathematics is a part of the Academy of Ideas. We offer all students the
opportunity to partake in an afterschool program which runs for five weeks during
late Term 1. In the program, students have opportunity to work with other
students to solve a succession of practical activities. The activities are
designed to stretch students thinking, encourage the ability to work
effectively with others and develop problem-solving skills.
The Accelerated Mathematics program begins in Year 8. The
highest performing students who would most benefit from curriculum compacting
are offered positions in the program. The program is designed for students who
are progressing at a faster rate than their peers. Students in the accelerated program
complete Years 8, 9 and 10 in a two-year period, finishing their Year 10
studies by the end of Year 9. Students would then complete Mathematical Methods
one year ahead of their peers.
Students will complete Mathematical Methods by the end of Year
11. In Year 12, students will have the opportunity to study a university subject
of their choice during Terms 1 and 2 and then may use the in class time to
devote to other subjects during Terms 3 and 4 in preparation for their external
exams. An option to repeat Units 3 and 4 of Mathematical Methods to improve
student’s contribution to their ATAR may also be given to selected students.
During Year 10 we also offer a preparation course for
students who wish to study Specialist Mathematics in Year 11 and 12. The aim is
to give opportunity to student to become familiar with the mathematical
concepts studied in in Specialist Mathematics during Year 11 and 12.
Between Year 7 and 12 there are also multiple
opportunities for students to be involved in excursions, listen to invited
guest speakers and be involved in both intra and interschool problem solving
competitions.
